Hello from Lockport NY!

That's a picture of the amazing lock system here at Lockport. It's the largest and most impressive set of locks on the entire canal, raising (or lowering) boats a whopping 50feet to get the canal out of the valley and up to meet the Niagara River. If you look closely you can see the old original set of 5 locks there on the right. They later updated the left set to make it two locks instead of the five.

I ended up getting into Lockport at a ridiculous 9:30am, thanks to Anna deciding we needed to wake up at 5:30am. But that just means we had plenty of time to go around to the museum and chat with people around town. I'm looking forward to stopping back here on the way back, when hopefully the Lockport Caves boat tours will be open.

While in Lockport we also went to the Erie Canal Discovery Center, where we were treated to a lovely educational film on the history of the canal and more specifically the lock stysem here in Lockport.

Here is my host/tourguide for the film:

Anna wasn't too impressed with him. I'm not sure if it was the floor to ceiling movie screen in general, or if she was afraid of the giant man that started talking out of nowhere, but for the whole film she huddled in the corner all pitiful like.

And then, at the end of the film the screen slides open and you step on to a little packet boat stage thing they've built.

That was super fun to drag Anna on to. Actually, once I got her through the screen/door she basically just curled up on the floor and slept for the rest of the film.

It was a pretty cute and informative little film and museum. Well worth the $4 of admission!

Next up....somewhere between here and Tonawanda NY.

Brockport, NY

The lift bridge on Main St., Brockport.

Anna and I made it to Brockport on Friday afternoon. We had planned to walk to Spencerport that day and just find a place to set up camp. But, as has been happening lately, we arrived at Spencerport quite a bit earlier than planned. I think we got there around 1-ish? So, after stopping at a cafe for a warm drink and a bathroom break, we decided to just say heck with it and walk the final 7 miles down the canal to Brockport.

Boy am I glad we did! There were crazy thunder storms and wind that night. Thankfully we were happily inside my friend's house and not in a flimsy tent!

So now we've been here for a few days, resting and visiting and waiting out the cold front. (It snowed Saturday night and Sunday morning!)

The plan is to leave tomorrow and make it to Albion, where I have another friend willing to let us stay in her guest room for a night. Then it's off again westward and towards the end of the Erie Canal. So far the weather says it's going to get warmer towards the end of the week. Here's hoping they're right!
